Insurance & Medicare for Home Medical Equipment
Understanding how insurance or Medicare may apply to home medical equipment can be confusing—especially when you're already trying to arrange care, prepare a home, or find equipment quickly.
Coverage can depend on the type of equipment, medical necessity, your specific plan, required documentation, and the supplier you use.

Does Insurance Cover Home Medical Equipment?
It can.
Health insurance plans may provide coverage for certain types of durable medical equipment, commonly referred to as DME, when the equipment meets the plan's requirements.
However, having insurance does not automatically mean that every piece of home medical equipment will be covered.
Coverage may depend on factors such as:
The type of equipment
Medical necessity
A prescription or healthcare provider's order
Documentation requirements
Your specific benefits
Deductibles and coinsurance
Prior authorization requirements
Whether the supplier participates with your insurance
Rental versus purchase requirements
The best way to understand your coverage is to contact your insurance provider directly.
Private Health Insurance & Medical Equipment
Private health insurance coverage varies significantly from one plan to another.
A plan may cover certain equipment while excluding other products or features. It may require prior authorization, documentation from a healthcare provider, or the use of an in-network or participating equipment supplier.
Before obtaining equipment through insurance, consider asking your plan:
Is this type of equipment covered?
What qualifies it as medically necessary?
Do I need a prescription or written order?
Is prior authorization required?
Do I need to use a specific DME supplier?
Is the equipment rented or purchased under my benefit?
What deductible, copay, or coinsurance applies?
Are specific models or features excluded?
What documentation is required?
Knowing these answers can make it much easier to compare the insurance pathway with purchasing or renting equipment privately.

Medicare & Durable Medical Equipment
Medicare may provide coverage for certain durable medical equipment when applicable requirements are met.
Medicare Part B can cover qualifying DME when it is considered medically necessary and prescribed for use in the home. It also notes that the supplier itself must meet Medicare's applicable enrollment requirements for Medicare billing.
Prosperity Health is not currently a Medicare-billing DME provider. Equipment rented or purchased directly from Prosperity Health is self-pay.
If you want to pursue Medicare coverage for equipment, you should verify the current requirements with Medicare and determine what eligible suppliers are available to you.

What About Medicare Advantage?
Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurers and can have their own networks, authorization processes, and requirements for obtaining home medical equipment.
If you have Medicare Advantage, contact your plan before obtaining equipment if you intend to use your benefits.
Useful questions include:
Is the equipment covered by my plan?
Do I need prior authorization?
Do I need a prescription?
Which DME suppliers can I use?
What About Medicaid?
Medicaid coverage and eligibility requirements can vary by state and program.
Certain home medical equipment may be covered when applicable requirements are met, but the process, documentation, participating providers, and covered equipment can differ.
If you're considering Medicaid benefits, contact the appropriate Medicaid program or managed-care plan directly to determine what coverage is available and which suppliers you can use.
Prosperity Health does not currently bill Medicaid.
What Types of Home Medical Equipment May Have Insurance Considerations?
Coverage depends on the individual plan and circumstances, but insurance questions commonly arise around equipment such as:
Hospital Beds
A healthcare provider may recommend a hospital bed for home use based on a person's medical and care needs. Coverage requirements can differ by insurer, bed type, features, and documentation.
Power Wheelchairs & Mobility Equipment
Power mobility equipment can involve additional eligibility, documentation, and supplier requirements when pursued through insurance.
Oxygen & Respiratory Equipment
Oxygen and other respiratory equipment may involve prescriptions and specific coverage requirements. Equipment selection and prescribed therapy should follow the direction of the appropriate healthcare professional.
Other equipment—including lift chairs, ramps, stair lifts, accessories, and home accessibility products—may be treated differently by different plans. Always confirm the specific item with your insurer rather than assuming it is covered.
Why Would Someone Choose Self-Pay?
Insurance can be valuable when equipment qualifies for coverage, but it isn't necessarily the right pathway for every person or every situation.
Some individuals and families choose self-pay because:
The equipment they want isn't covered
They don't meet their plan's eligibility requirements
Their deductible or out-of-pocket responsibility affects the value of using insurance
They want a particular model, feature, or accessory
Their preferred supplier doesn't participate with their insurance
They want more control over the equipment they select
They prefer to purchase equipment directly rather than navigate an insurance process
In other situations, pursuing insurance or Medicare coverage may make more sense.
There isn't one universally better option. The important thing is understanding the differences before making a decision.
